Will AI Replace Job Coaches?

(Opinion article, by Roger Cohen)

A new study from View.Brussels sheds light on how AI will impact different jobs. It categorises jobs into three groups:
1️⃣ Roles with strong AI exposure but high human-AI complementarity (Human + AI > either alone).
2️⃣ Roles with strong AI exposure and high risk of being replaced by AI.
3️⃣ Roles that won’t be significantly affected by AI.

(While the names of the categories are more technical, this is the essence.)

Where do career coaches and job coaches fit in?
They fall into the “intellectual, scientific, and artistic professions” category, most of which are at high risk of being replaced by AI.
However, I firmly believe that the future of job coaching depends on the job coaches themselves.

This moment is a unique chance to take control. To let AI handle the tasks it does best — fast, precise, repetitive ones, as well as accessing vast databases and sources in no time — and focus on what only humans can do. Most coaches I know didn’t choose this profession because they love crafting motivation letters or reformatting CVs. They did it to create impact.

With AI, coaches can shift their focus to what really matters:
– Helping clients discover their unique strengths and preferences.
– Challenging unhelpful beliefs and habits while building new, effective ones.
– Boosting self-confidence through self-knowledge.
– Supporting clients with motivation and persistence.
– …

This is the chance for coaches to ensure their careers fit into the first category (complementary with AI) and not the second one (replaceable by AI). I hope no coach still believes their job belongs to the third category (not affected).
